may gibbs: more than a fairy tale

acquaint yourself to australias beloved childhood author from the early 1900's...

a self portrait

her first notion of gumnuts was a bookmark that she hand painted front and back...

as adorable as all her drawings were, they were based on real events surrounding WWI. war packages included postcards of her images, from sisters sewing, to gumnets in slings with a kookaburra being the redcross. as time went on she crossed over into 5 very successful childrens book. i just wanted to share some of the charm and delight her drawings gave me, look how creative she was to turn the eucalyptus into such adorable little snugglepots...

I popped over VS's blog and immediately got sucked into the colorful world of NOLA! I could people watch there at Cafe du Monde and peruse book stores for hours on end. Thanks for the link to her blog, love seeing the watercolors come to life!

  6. Cannot wait to get my hands on the book. May Gibbs has thrilled me since the tender age of 3 when my mother read Sugglepot and Cuddlepie to me. We had so many little books and I treasure a later edition which I will share with my grandchildren.
