garden chronicles, the bearded iris~

I used to collect these like a lunatic, I had over 1200 named varieties of iris, but time, age, hill, site, weeds, rattlesnakes, glasses, distance and a new beach house all contributed to their HUGE demise, but I never stopped loving them! I have not even been in my old garden for years, this week I am venturing back to see if ANY iris survived with me gone and nothing but neglect as their one true companion, it will be NOTHING like the olden days...

today I went to my first iris garden in almost a decade, I used to plan our vacations to drive and see scads of the growers all over the west, today felt like running into old friends, I knew them all, happy dancing colors throughout a terraced garden. I ended up purchasing a dozen pots, I have owned them all before, I was just so eager to buy something...

Our new house was once part of a huge ranch that stretched for many miles, beneath us, the original farmstead was built in the 1860's. When we purchased this fall, tucked under old lilac bushes and against the fence line were clumps of iris that I promptly divided and put up front to see what treasures I might find. So far, all that has bloomed is this historical intermediate iris crimson king, thought to be from around the 1830's.

let the fun begin!

  1. Oh the beauty...rows upon rows of blooms! I can't even imagine how many hours of work and sweat it took to create your hilltop garden. Love seeing the varieties and their names...'Osay Canuc' and 'Deep Dark Secret' take my breath away. I know you are in planning and planting heaven!
